Pat Cummins Makes IPL Auction History, Joins Sunrisers Hyderabad For Record Bid Of Rs 20.5 Crore

Pat Cummins surpassed the previous record of Rs 18.5 Crore held by England all-rounder Sam Curran.

Australian cricket's World Cup-winning captain, Pat Cummins, made history at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai by breaking the record for the most expensive player in IPL history. Sunrisers Hyderabad secured Cummins' services for an unprecedented price of Rs 20.50 crore on Tuesday following an intense bidding war with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Commencing with a base price of Rs 2 crore, Cummins found himself at the center of a fierce bidding war, primarily involving Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Sunrisers franchise. In a groundbreaking moment, the all-rounder became the first player in IPL history to breach the 20-crore mark.

The 30-year-old surpassed the previous record held by England all-rounder Sam Curran, who was acquired by the Punjab Kings for Rs 18.50 crore in the 2023 auction. Cummins not only secured the title of the most expensive overseas player but also claimed the prestigious title of the most expensive player ever in IPL history.

Cummins led the Australian team to a historic sixth World Cup title by defeating India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in November.

It isn't the first time that franchises have been after Cummins' services to such an extent. The Australia all-rounder was earlier roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 15.5 crore in the IPL 2020 auction.

As far as Cummins' IPL career is concerned, he has played a total of 42 matches, taking 45 wickets. It isn't just Cummins' bowling that makes him an asset. Batting down the order, Cummins has provided some brilliant cameos with the bat. With the bat, he has 379 runs to his name at a strike-rate of 152.21.

The Sunrisers haven't had a stable captaincy option over the last few years. Cummins doesn't just fit into their squad as a bowler who can bat but a leader who could be given the team's captaincy.

KKR Break The Bank For Mitchell Starc, Splash Rs 24.75 Crore To Make Him Most Expensive IPL Buy Ever

Mitchell Starc, Australia's World Cup-winning pacer, became the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), after he was bought for Rs 24.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders. The left-arm pacer became the second player to breach the 20-cocre mark after team-mate Pat Cummins was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.5 crore on the same day in the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai on Tuesday

The 33-year-old, who went into the auction at a base price of Rs 2 crore, attracted bids from Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals. Both teams were involved in an intense bidding war. Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans joined in to take the price past Rs 20 crore, before the Kolkata-based franchise bagged him at a record price.

Australia's premier bowler, Starc returns to the IPL after an eight-year hiatus.

The veteran Australian pacer had abstained from participating in the IPL since 2015, focusing on fulfilling national duties. Starc's last appearance in the IPL auction was in 2018, where the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured his services for a sum of Rs 9.4 crore. However, an unfortunate fracture in his right tibial bone resulted in him missing the entire season.

Starc's IPL journey comprises two seasons, both spent with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the 2014 edition, he showcased his bowling prowess by claiming 14 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 28.71. The following year, Starc elevated his performance, amassing 20 wickets in 13 matches with an outstanding average of just 14.55. Notably, he achieved his best figures of 4/15 during the 2015 season.

Beyond his IPL contributions, Starc played a pivotal role in Australia's historic sixth ODI World Cup victory. His exceptional bowling skills were on full display as he bagged 16 wickets in 10 matches during the tournament, underlining his significance in the team's success. As Starc prepares to make his return to the IPL, fans eagerly anticipate the resurgence of the seasoned Australian pacer on the T20 stage.

Starc boasts an outstanding track record in limited-overs cricket over the past two years, showcasing his prowess as a premier fast bowler. In ODI matches during this period, Starc has been highly effective, accumulating a remarkable tally of 41 wickets in 22 games. In 2022, his economy rate reached 4.26, a testament to his ability to control the run flow.

While the economy rate experienced a slight uptick to 6.16 in 2023, Starc's overall performance remains commendable. In T20Is during 2022, he continued to make an impact, claiming 13 wickets in 10 matches with an impressive average of 24. One of the highlights of his T20I performances in 2022 was achieving his career-best bowling figures of 4/20, underscoring his proficiency in the shortest format of the game.

The 5-time champions have only 6 slots to fill but have one of the biggest purses amongst the 10 teams. The defending champions released only 8 players but they had to let go of Ben Stokes, who made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 after injury concerns.

Rohit Sharma 'First Choice Captain' For T20I World Cup Despite Being Sacked By Mumbai Indians | REPORTS

Indian opener Rohit Sharma is all set to take the lead in the upcoming T20I World Cup 2024, which is going to be played in the West Indies and USA in June next year, according to reports. Despite being sacked from the role of captaincy by the Mumbai Indians (MI), the BCCI is still considering Rohit as the no. 1 choice for the upcoming ICC event due to his impressive leadership skills during the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023.

Rohit Sharma had a stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, leading India to the final and showcasing his prowess as both captain and batter. The Indian skipper amassed 597 runs at a stunning average of 54.27 in 11 innings.

The Indian opener is one of the most dangerous batters in the shortest format of the game. Rohit has smashed 3853 runs in 148 matches at an average of 30.82 with a strike rate of 139.25, including four centuries and 29 half-centuries. His highest score in the 20-over format is 118 runs.

A recent report, confirmed that the former MI skipper will continue to lead India across all formats despite speculation about his leadership following his removal from the Mumbai Indians on December 15.

The report further added that Rohit's impressive leadership skills during the ODI World Cup 2023, where India reached the final, are the main reason why the 36-year-old Rohit is considered the first choice for the upcoming ICC T20I event.

The officials further stated that the Indian opener will continue to lead the Indian cricket team in the next T20I World Cup, even if he hasn't played any T20I matches since the loss against England in the T20I World Cup semi-final clash in Australia in 2022.

He holds onto the captaincy for the next World Cup, even with Hardik Pandya equally fit and ready to play. When questioned about the possibility of Hardik Pandya taking over, the official dismissed such notions, emphasizing Rohit's current captaincy in all formats.

It was believed that the former MI skipper could lose his leadership role for the Indian side after Hardik was named as his successor in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But it looks like Rohit, who has won five titles for MI as a captain, will continue to lead India across all formats.
